Winter And Cold Weather Skin Care Tips
Winter is upon us, meaning you may find your skin is drier or more sensitive than usual. Below are the tips you need to keep your skin healthy and nourished during the cold and dry winter season.
Invest In A Humidifier
The cold dry air isn’t your only concern during the winter months, but also how dry the air in your home becomes as you crank up the heat. Invest in a humidifier to add the extra bit of moisture to your air. Choose from cool misted or heated humidifiers, and if you want to scent the air, add a couple drops of a natural essential oil to your water. You can even invest in a single room humidifier you use in your bedroom while you sleep or a family-sized humidifier that you place in a shared room. Also, kick up the frequency of steaming, which will feel extra-special when it’s cold out.
A conspiracy? No, not that kind of cover up!
One of the best ways to care for your skin during the winter months is to properly cover up before you head outdoors. This is especially important if you live in extremely cold temperatures or in a city where you commute via bus or train. However, you can severely chap your lips and skin simply walking to and from the car without proper protection. Invest in weather appropriate earmuffs, hat, glove, scarf, shoes, socks, and coat. The good news is, you can find super cute winter-friendly options!
Boost The Omegas In Your Daily Diet
Skin health isn’t just externally driven, so you must amp up your internal hydration during the winter months. This goes beyond drinking your 8 to 10 glasses of hydrating fluids each day, but also to increasing skin-healthy omega fatty acids in your daily diet. This is easy to do with a supplement or by eating more fish, avocados, and nuts. Even 3 days a week can go a long way in protecting your skin during the winter months and year-round.
Switch To A Winter Skin Care Routine
We shared Autumn Skincare Tips with our readers a few months back, which still apply during the winter months. Below are just a few highlights:
- Switch to a cream-based body lotion; apply after your morning shower and again in the evening if needed.
- Keep hand cream and hydrating lip balm nearby to keep these exposed areas from chapping and cracking.
- Switch to chemical-free bath and body products, which you can easily find from Natural French Soap.
- Switch to a thicker facial moisturiser and consider using a PM serum to ultra-hydrate your face.
- Gently exfoliate, but only if your skin is not already chapped or cracked. Loofa, scrubs, and Epson salts work well.
- Even if it’s grey and cloudy, the sun is still out, so don’t forget your daily SPF protection.
Get Your Beauty Rest
It doesn’t matter what time of year it is, sleep is one of the best things you can do to help your body and your skin repair from the day. Aim for 7 to 9 hours of beauty sleep each night and invest in satin, soft cotton or bamboo, or comfy cosy winter flannel linens. If your bedding is cute but rough and scratchy, it will further dry and irritate your skin. Also, consider a satin finish beauty pillow to help your face and hair retain moisture, minimise breakage, and keep fine lines caused by sleeping on your stomach or side.
Don’t wait until your skin shows signs of winter irritation to turn to the tips above, but it’s never too late to make skin-healthy changes to your daily beauty routine!
